Eurycoma Longifolia — Tongkat Ali

What the current evidence suggests

Effects on total testosterone in men

Nine studies were reviewed and five randomized trials entered the meta-analysis. The authors reported an overall increase in total testosterone, particularly among men with hypogonadism, while emphasizing the need for further research.

Higher-level evidence, but conclusions depend on a relatively small and heterogeneous study base.

Randomized double-blind trial

Testosterone, fatigue and quality of life in ageing men

In 105 men aged 50–70 with low testosterone, standardized extract at 100 or 200 mg was compared with placebo for 12 weeks. Improvements were reported in selected hormonal and symptom measures.

The study used one proprietary standardized extract and was funded by its manufacturer.

Six-month randomized trial

Exercise, erectile function and testosterone

Forty-five men with symptoms of androgen deficiency were assigned to exercise, Tongkat Ali, both interventions or control conditions. The largest improvements occurred when supplementation was combined with concurrent training.

Small study; the combined lifestyle intervention makes it difficult to isolate the supplement’s independent contribution.

Sexual well-being and quality-of-life measures

Ismail et al. · Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine · 2012

A 12-week trial involving 109 men assessed a standardized water extract using validated questionnaires, seminal-fluid analysis and safety measures.

Results relate to the tested extract and study population; they should not automatically be generalized to every Tongkat Ali product.

Sixty-three moderately stressed adults received standardized Tongkat Ali or placebo for four weeks. The researchers reported changes in selected stress-hormone and mood measures.

The trial included both men and women and was short in duration.

Clinical evidence in male sexual health

This review evaluated 11 human clinical studies. Seven reported favorable associations, while four did not demonstrate sufficient effects, illustrating that the evidence is not uniformly positive.
